Under the bridge

When it gets unbearably hot or the weather is just terrible…

the group that normally hangs out at the McCarren skate park moves a few blocks away to a dry spot under the BQE. I stopped there for a few minutes today to get away from the rain, chat with the skaters and take some photos. I’m hoping to spend some more time in the near future with these kids- they’re good people and aren’t afraid to be in front of the camera. Here’s a few of the photos…

Birthday boy

Author: Mike  |  Category: Just for fun

Zach and I first met at the bottom of Mt. Fuji and by the time we made it to the top of the mountain in time for the sunrise we were cold and tired, but good friends. I crashed at his place before an epic morning on the National Lawn for Obama’s inauguration and I’m looking forward to the next adventure.

But in the meantime, happy birthday friend and have a great time tonight!
At the Inauguration. For more images from that morning check out the photo story on my main site or click the image below.

And climbing Mt. Fuji…

Bro is back in town

Author: Mike  |  Category: Just for fun, People

I have pretty incredible family and I’m so grateful to have them.

So obviously it was great having them visit Sehba and me in New York for a few days earlier this month. And as it’s been since I was young, my brother let me take some photos while we were grabbing a last beer before he left for JFK.

Clearly good looks run in the family.

Fun and Drinks

Author: Mike  |  Category: Just for fun

Sitting or more accurately dancing in Miss Favela you get the sense that you’re not in Brooklyn anymore.

The caipirinhas flow, the music doesn’t stop and crowd is constantly moving to the beat. It’s a great spot to get some food, but don’t expect to sit and enjoy a romantic dinner.

Thai Red Curry

Foods and snacks seem to fall in and out of favor in regular cycles for me and seeing as it’s almost summer I’ve been craving some spicy home-made Thai curry. So the other night I threw some things together and came out with this:

Window Dressing

Author: Mike  |  Category: Featured Post, United States

Living in New York we’re surrounded by some of the most beautiful and stunning architecture and yet it’s hard to see it with fresh eyes at times, to not to take it for granted, let alone imagine the people who dreamed it up and those that built it.

So it was impressive running into Jason Harte and the guys at Universal Glass and Door Inc. the other day. They were in the midst of installing a glass window the size of a small truck just off 5th Ave. and it was fascinating to see it come down, not to a piece of machinery or specialized tool, but to a group of guys, bending at the knees and lifting a glass wall by sheer strength.

raining again

Author: Mike  |  Category: Notes

One of my favorite smells is the first rain- but that smell is long gone by now and all that’s left is the odd, somewhat revolting smell of puddles that haven’t dried out, but have caught a street’s worth of garbage and are trying to drowned it.

So here’s hoping tonight’s storm will wash it all away and the sun will come out tomorrow.

That’s a mighty fine doppler reading you have there- yeah I’m staying home.
